The Program at The Good Shepherd Mission

Working through Mike Vieira, The Holy Spirit of God has made structure an integral part of what takes place at the Mission on a day-to day basis. As mentioned in the History page, the Good Shepherd Mission, in its early days provided a shelter for mostly elderly men who had fallen on hard times. The gospel was preached and hymns were sung, the men were fed, clothed and given a place to sleep, but there was a structure but it was rather loose. When Mike took over, he began, slowly at first, to put more structure into the daily activities at the Mission. Specific blocks of time were allocated to teaching and preaching from the pulpit, by Mike himself and by guest speakers. When Mike's wife joined him at the mission a few years later, she took over the jobs of office manager and administrator. This gave Mike more time to devote to the men, teaching them the Bible and developing them as disciples. He also was led to set aside other blocks of time for praise and worship, while still others were used to conduct small group (four to seven men) Bible studies. Quiet times were also used where men could read and meditate on the Bible by themselves. In addition, responsibilities were assigned to men who had been at the Mission for a while. Some men became cooks and kitchen helpers, some were given responsibility for taking care of laundry, others to the inventory and distribution of clothing donated to the Mission by its supporters. Somewhere along the way this structure evolved into a nine-month cycle to which individual men committed themselves. Rules and regulations were created along with disciplinary actions that would be invoked in the event of violations.
